DEVELOPMENT OF A KITTEN
Before you can have a litter kittens from your female you'll have to
wait until she is an adult with the right age for giving birth ofcourse!
| You can bring her to the stud when she is in heat, but
before you bring her there she must have been tested negative on aids and
leukemia.
When the female is in heat, you bring her to the stud on day 2 or 3. Ofcourse the stud also must have been tested negative on aids and leukemia! I mostly give my female a treatment against worms and cut the nails from her frontlegs before I bring her to the stud. And I only will bring her there when she is optimal condition. After being for 3 - 5 days with a stud, the female can be taken home. |
When the female is back you have to wait if she is pregnant.
When she is back home for 3 weeks, after having mated with the stud, you
have to see if her nipples turn into the color rose/pink. This will be the
sign that your female is pregnant! Mostly the pregnant female will sleep more than see usually does. On the left you see Yrsa being pregnant just 3 days before she gave
birth to her very first litter. |
| Before the female will deliver the kittens, she most of the
time gets restless and is searching for a quiet place where she can
deliver the kittens. When the contractions will start she must deliver the first kitten within 2 or 3 hours. When not, you have to contact a vet because maybe there is something wrong inside. For instance a kitten who gots stuck in the birthcanal. As soon as the first kitten is born, the mother will start to wash the kitten, the washing stimulates the breathing of the kitten. |
When all kittens are born, dry and sucking by their mother,
the mother will lay down with a heavenly look in her eyes.
On the left you see my very proud and happy Shari with her first litter. |
| 1 WEEK OLD
In the first week of his life a kitten will (almost) double his
birthweight. |
In week 2 the kittens can crawl around and their eyes will
be opened now, but they can't see very clearly at this moment. They discover their own legs and often start to suck on it - they also suck on their brothers and sisters :-)
3 WEEKS OLD This is the time for a breeder to make a start with the
weaning of the kittens. Most breeders will start with a kind of porridge
made of kittenmilk with rice etc in it.
4 WEEKS OLD
As soon as the kittens will eat food theirselves(there are kittens who refuse to eat at this young age, they only want milk from their mother), I will place a cat's box in their neighbourhood. Mostly they start with eating stones out of the cat's box and play in
it. At this age they already play with each other and are practising for a marathon in the future. |
| 5 WEEKS OLD
Now is the time to give the litter the
first treatment against worms. Because they can walk better and better, they make longer walks in my house and when they have to pee, they have to rightaway! So sometimes they pee at not wanted places in my room. Time to place more cat's boxes in the house!!!! |
6 WEEKS OLD Most kittens eat around this age quite good. When I give them a plate with boiled chicken pieces, the plate is almost empty before I served it. There are kittens who eat dryfood at the age of 3 weeks, but there are also kittens who refuse to eat dryfood on the age of 6 weeks.
7 WEEKS OLD This is the age most kittens start to see me as their second mother. Ofcourse some kittens did this at an earlier age.
They want to climb in
my throusers/legs as if I am a living cat-climbing tree.
8 WEEKS OLD The time for their second wormtreatment, because they will be vaccinated for the first time in week 9.
They also
may walk in the fresh air in my run with the other adult cats. |
9 WEEKS OLD
When everything is okay, the kitten will get his first vaccination
| 10 WEEKS OLD The kittens are real part of the family right now and this makes it very hard to think about their leaving the house in the nearest future. For me this is the time asking myself
WHY I 'like' breeding cats. (sigh) |
11 WEEKS OLD Time for the third treatment against worms. The kittens are very noisy at this age when they are awake, but I love
to watch them playing, fighting and chasing....
| 12 WEEKS OLD
In this week the kittens will get their second vaccination and the countdown for their departure starts. All kittens can eat everything adult cats eat, but most of them still love to suck by their mother. They even want to suck on the other adult cats here.
13/14 WEEKS OLD The days with a smile and tears..... Tears from me because the kittens will leave the house.
